Automatic Packet Reporting System (APRS)
The KI6UKZ APRS station is a Yaesu VX-8R. It's mostly used for
intermittent, on foot operation. It is configured to beacon as KI6UKZ
on 144.390 MHz. The radio can receive APRS messages. If you are
close enough to see a recent beacon, you can probably text me using
APRS.
Radios
Base
Yaesu FT-817
The Yaesu FT-817 is a field portable HF/VHF/UHF radio. It's maximum
transmit power is five watts on the amateur radio HF bands between 160
meter and 10 meter. It also transmits on 6 meter, 2 meter and 70
centimeter. It's receiver covers 100 KHz to 56 MHz, 76 MHz to 154 Mhz
and 420 MHz to 470 MHz. The supported modes include SSB, CW, AM and
FM. It includes an internal battery. A LDG Z-817 is used as an
antenna tuner. This system is primarily used for fixed HF, VHF and
UHF operations. It's occasionally used as an oversized portable radio
for VHF/UHF phone, due to it's relatively large battery capacity
compared to other stock portables.
Portable
Yaesu VX-8R
The Yaesu VX-8R is a rugged multi-band hand-held tranceiver. It
operates on 6 meter, 2 meter, 1.25 meter and 70 centimeter. It has a
power output of up to 5 watts. The radio is outfitted with the
optional FGPS-2 GPS receiver and MH-74 speaker microphone. The A band
provides continuous receiver coverage from 500 KHz to 999.90 MHz, less
blocked cellular frequencies. It's B band can be used for APRS
operation. Other features include an independent AM/FM receiver,
weather alerts, a built-in barometer and thermometer. The radio also
has a stereo headphone jack. In a limited way, this small system
offers integrated communications, navigation and sensor capabilities.
